We Are "Bucket Fillers"

Bucket Fillers
JK/SK students are becoming familiar with the messages in the books, "Have You Filled a Bucket Today" by Carol McCloud and "How Full Is Your Bucket" by Tom Rath and Mary Reckmeyer.  Students will be recognized for demonstrating positive character traits, being inclusive and accepting, performing random acts of kindness and being "upstanders" to incidents of bullying. By doing so, they will be filling others' invisible buckets and making our school even more wonderful!

“How Full is Your Bucket for Kids” – Book Overview

Through the story of a little boy named Felix, this charming book explains to children how being kind not only helps others, it helps them, too. As he goes about his day, Felix interacts with different people — his sister Anna, his grandfather, other family and friends. Some people are happy, but others are grumpy or sad. Using the metaphor of a bucket and dipper, Felix’ grandfather explains why the happy people make Felix feel good, while the others leave him feeling bad — and how Felix himself is affecting others, whether he means to or not. This beautifully illustrated adaptation takes the original book’s powerful message — that the way we relate to others has a profound effect on every aspect of our lives — and tailors it to a child’s unique needs and level of understanding.

In Room 101, we are trying to be "bucket fillers" each and every day. Each student has their own invisible bucket and when they show good character they fill their bucket and the buckets of the classmate(s) they showed kindness and caring towards. Likewise, if they are using unkind words or actions toward each other, they are being a 'bucket dipper' and emptying a friend`s bucket.  Together we are beginning to teach our youngest students that having strong character is important!
